German Exchange Students Visit Glenlola

German Exchange Students Visit Glenlola

Willkommen in Bangor!

Pupils from Glenlola Collegiate were delighted to welcome their German Exchange partners to Northern Ireland from 2-7 May as part of our well-established exchange programme with the Felix-Klein-Gymnasium in Göttingen. Our visitors were able to experience everyday school life here at Glenlola, as well as enjoying excursions to Titanic Belfast, Stormont, the Giant’s Causeway and Dunluce Castle. A beautiful week of sunshine and blue skies allowed our visitors to see the famous Northern Irish scenery at its finest. Friendships established during our visit to Göttingen in February continued to blossom during their visit to Bangor, with wonderful cultural and linguistic experiences shared by all, and lifelong memories made.

Thank you to parents and pupils who kindly hosted our German visitors during their stay for their kindness and warm welcome, which was greatly appreciated and made their stay all the more memorable and enjoyable.

Oxford Professorship

Former Glenlola pupil Joanna Neilly has been appointed to an associate  professorship in German at St Peter’s College, Oxford.  We are very proud that she has been elected Associate Professor in German at Oxford and Tutorial Fellow in German at St Peter’s College.

After sitting A levels at Glenlola Collegiate in 2003, Joanna went on to study French and German at the University of Oxford (Keble College). She is also a former pupil of Bangor Central Integrated Primary School.

Joanna was awarded her PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2013 for her thesis examining oriental images, themes and characters in the work of the German Romantic writer E.T.A. Hoffmann. Her first book, derived from this thesis, is entitled E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Orient: Romantic Aesthetics and the German Imagination.  It was published in 2016 and included a dedication to Joanna’s A level French and German teachers from Glenlola.

Joanna is currently Lecturer in German at St John’s College, Oxford until June 2017.  She will move to St Peter’s College in October 2017 where she will teach German language and modern German literature as well as continuing her own research into nineteenth-century German culture.

We are delighted to hear of Joanna’s success and extend our congratulations to her on this outstanding achievement.

CCF Easter Camp 2017

CCF Easter Camp, Halton, Lancaster

5-9 April 2017

The journey to the ferry terminal was unusually quiet, but that’s only to be expected with a 5:45 am start!  A pleasant sail and drive saw 30 cadets, male/female, army/navy, arrive at Halton Camp, just outside Lancaster, on the bank of the River Lune, mid-afternoon, but most importantly in time for dinner.  This was followed by briefings on the activities planned for the next few days.  These were to be run with the aid of a local outdoor pursuits centre, Borthwick Hall. Day one was a brilliant hike in the Yorkshire Dales.  Although it was cold, windy and a bit hazy at points it was a very interesting walk up Ingleborough peak.  It was great to see the limestone scenery of caves, swallow holes and limestone pavements.  Lunch was enjoyed on top with views to the Irish Sea and the famous Ribblehead Viaduct.  This was a challenging hike which gave the cadets a real sense of achievement.  However, they were too tired for any activities that night and got a bit of chillax time.

Over the next two days the cadets enjoyed a canoe trip on the Lancaster Canal, a leap of faith, tree climbing, bouldering and a low ropes challenge course over a small lake…nearly everyone stayed dry!  Many skills of teamwork and leadership were learned with many overcoming personal fears to rise to the various challenges.  As ever the outdoor centre staff were very complimentary about our cadets and their attitudes and standards.  Enjoy the accompanying photos which should give a flavour of the activities.  Well done to all involved.
